I checked with the Cabarrus Clerk of Court’s office this past week for an update on Stacy Renee Shaw, and also Daniel Burton Wilson, who head-oned six cyclists. I was told that Wilson was arraigned last summer, but his case is still pending: he still has not come to trial.

On the larceny charge, Stacy got community service and an order to pay restitution. I was told this was a theft of cash. She had done the community service but still had not paid the restitution.

The lady at the Clerk’s office also said Stacy got caught driving again, on suspended/revoked license. She didn’t have further specifics on that at her fingertips, but said that combined with the larceny conviction did cause Stacy’s probation to be revoked. However, Stacy has still not been jailed, as she is appealing the probation revocation, and the appeal is still pending.

It appears that the dog's owner has no insurance, and also no assets worth suing for. He owns the one-acre lot that he lives on, and a vehicle, but you can't get a judgement on a person's residence or work vehicle.

Despite getting 100% charity care from CMC and the faculty physician network there, I still have had expenses totalling over $8,000. My medical rider on my car insurance doesn't cover this type of event, because no motor vehicle was involved.

I started riding again at the end of February. I had a little setback in July in the form of a collision with a motorcycle, which is described in its own post. I sustained no fractures in that and resumed riding at the end of August. I ended up with 4,585 miles for 2011, down a bit from 10,230 in 2010, but acceptable under the circumstances I guess.

This is a fundamental problem with both bike lanes and sidepaths. It stems from the basic engineering error of putting a through lane up the outside of a lane from which vehicles can turn across the through lane. Bike boxes do not fix this, nor do they solve any problem at all. The inescapable truth is that bike lanes and other segregationist bicycle infrastructure strategies do not make bicycling safer or better, and in fact endanger and impede bicyclists. The sooner this is recognized, the better off we'll all be.

My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. McCullough's family and friends. I am so very sorry for your loss. My husband was hit and killed while bicycling as well. I cannot get anyone to pursue a criminal charge, even though the driver was under the influence of sleeping pill.s I hope there is justice for Mr. McCullough. We need to stand up and say "Enough!"
