Harry Johnson Struck by Hit and Run Driver – He’s OK – Find the Driver

Posted in Bicycle Crime, Crash, Hit and Run - Help Find the Driver, Injury on March 19, 2012 by cltvelo

Monday March 19th.

Harry Johnson, ‘The Godfather of Charlotte Bicyclists’ was stuck by a sedan, maybe a Toyota or Honda on Selwyn Ave  at 6:30AM.    Harry suffered apparent injuries and refused medical treatment.   While it was dark and foggy, this was not a case of the driver not seeing the small group of illuminated bicyclists.  This drivers speed was impeded and his actions were deliberate and aggressive.   The driver illegally left the scene of the crash.  This is that section of Selwyn between Woodlawn and the Selwyn traffic circle.   Due to his location and aggression, it is very likely that the driver uses this road daily.  Every bicyclist needs to be  vigilant in this area.

Officer Lineberger produced the crash report.

I wish Harry a full and speedy recovery.

Clover Cyclist Assaulted

Posted in Advocacy, Bicycle Crime, Hit and Run - Help Find the Driver on May 13, 2011 by cltvelo

A driver assaulted a cyclist after near-miss in Gastonia.   I would like to encourage every cyclist to report such incidents to the police.   And if you know the driver of black Chevrolet, turn him in.

This is directly from Nicole Smith in the Charlotte Observer.

CLOVER A Gastonia, N.C., man says a driver attacked him while he was riding a bike near Ridge and Love roads in Clover on Wednesday.

The 51-year-old bicyclist was riding north about 7 p.m. when someone in a black Chevy drove by extremely close, according to a York County Sheriff’s Office report. The man said he put his hands up to show dismay, which prompted the driver to slam on his brakes and get out.

The suspect began to yell and told the biker he was “tired of dealing with people like you,” and he had almost caused him to wreck, the report states.

The suspect then kicked the man in the thigh and tried to punch him, but missed. He then drove away.

Another rider who was nearby confirmed the attack, according to the report.

>>Mid-90s Ford pickup, possible a Ford Ranger<<

(Thanks to Mark Ortiz for the tip and Eric Banks, Adam Myerson, Dave Zabriskie, ESPN.com and others for sharing this link.)

Experienced cyclist,  Michael Pellegrino, 48, was hit and killed on Highway 421 between Old Liberty Road and Troy Estates Road.  This is less than 2 hours north east of Charlotte;   close to Greensboro.  The driver did not stop.  The accident likely occurred early Sunday morning, but it could have happened earlier.

The driver struck Michael from behind.  There were no skid marks before or after the impact.  According to Trooper Matthew Mitchell, it appears that the driver gradually veered onto the shoulder and struck Pellegrino.

Hopefully headlight glass and other evidence at the scene, can help convict the driver if he/she is found.  Michael’s friends and family have my most sincere condolences.

If you have any information about the crash, please contact the highway patrol at 336-334-5500.  See Joe’s comment for reward details.
