Matthew Koch, Get Well Soon

Cyclist Matthew Koch has obvious injuries as a result of a bike-car collision.   He broke the car windshield in two places.  The accident happened at 4pm on Prosperity Church Road near Mallard Creek, 3 houses away from the driver’s home.  Matthew was riding in the dedicated bike lane.   The collision was the classic ‘left cross’, where the driver turns left across traffic into the path of an on coming cyclist.   According to the Police report, a jogger, jogging against traffic in the bike lane (west bound in the east bound lane), signaled for the driver to go.   The police report notes “Improper/No Signal” as a contributing circumstance for the driver.

Matthew was taken to CMC, I wish him a speedy recovery.

  1. I’ve encountered joggers coming at me in bike lanes, particularly on Scaleybark Rd. They can see behind me and expect me to move in to the traffic lane when it’s clear, but I can’t see behind me and hold my line right up until the dance. I could totally see how an on coming jogger would distract me from a ‘left cross’. How do you deal with an on coming jogger that directs traffic into your path?

Do you use a rear view mirror? I find using one of those very useful.
I have tried several. I like the one that rivendell bicycles puts out.
I can’t recall the maker but if you send me an email I can
    look it up.

Also be very visbible. Use a bicycle headlight. I recommend
a rechargeable one, or better yet one with a generator.
Use flashing red light in the back.

    Wear bright colors!!!
