Aaron Love
July 29th, 2009
Cyclist Aaron Love, 46, died from injuries sustained in an auto-bicycle collision on Wednesday at 12:45pm. The accident occurred at the intersection of Brice Street and Rush Ave. This is that residential neighborhood between Rozzelles FerryRd. and Freedom Drive. The conditions were clear and dry. According to police, Aaron entered the intersection from Brice Street without stopping for the stop sign, where he collided with a car traveling on Rush Ave. Rush Ave does not have a stop sign at Brice Street. The 20 year-old driver was not issued a citation.
My thoughts are with Aaron’s family and friends.
This is a very residential neighborhood, but does not have 4-way stops; there are no road markings for lane dividers or stop lines or crosswalks. In my opinion, if the road doesn’t have a dividing line / yellow line, it should have 4-way stops at each intersection. There is no indication on Brice St. that Rush Ave. traffic does not stop. In many Charlotte neighborhoods, 2-way stop intersections are clearly marked with ‘CROSS TRAFFIC DOES NOT STOP’ signs. I would like to see the city add signage to alert alert pedestrians, cyclists and drivers whenever cross traffic does not stop. As residential as this neighborhood seems, keep in mind that Aaron was traveling along the #8 bus route.
