Name Withheld Female is OK After Accident
During a Morrison YMCA group training ride, a female cyclist involved in an auto-bicycle collision. She is OK. EMS responded to the scene and she did get x-rays. The accident occurred Tom Short Rd on Wednesday evening at 7:30pm. The conditions were dry and clear. The driver, who lives on the block, stopped and proceeded through the stop sign into the intersection and crashed into the cyclist. The cyclist did not have a stop sign. The driver was not issued a citation. No other cyclists were involved, as the cyclist was slightly off the front of the group.
Although the car was traveling at a low speed (10mph), things could have been much worse. I wish her all the best with her bumps and bruises and getting over the trauma of the experience.
In my opinion, this accident was the driver’s fault. A Stop Sign means “you don’t have the right-of-way.”

A lot of your posts on accidents (which are a necessary evil , thanks), include the words, “the driver was not cited.” This is alarming! What is wrong with the CMPD that there seems to be a high-level anti-bicyclists stance? If the motorist drove through the stop sign into another car, wouldn’t there be a citation? This seems to be outrageous to me.

I think a survey of many car to car accidents would reveal that they do not right citations in those incidents either. My theory is that this is a problem with the way car insurance works. If you have an accident, someone is placed “at fault”. This is nearly as bad as a ticket or worse because your insurance rates will go up and remain high for 3 years following the accident.
With Bicycle-car accidents, the reports should be sure to list the driver at fault, regardless of citation and then of course the problem will be getting insurance companies to pay claims and adjust rates which is highly regulated in NC.

My husband was out running and I was driving on my way to the gym, and we both came up on the accident just after EMS arrived. We were worried about her since that day and have often wondered and prayed that she is okay. Our hearts are lightened by the report. We just knew that there had to be a driver error involved as rarely do cars drive the speed limit or completely stop at the signs on Tom Short. It’s really kind of scary out there. While neither of us are cyclist, I do know how dangerous it is for the cyclist in our community as I used to ride some in Greensboro and trained for the Tour de Tanglewood a couple of times. There should be stricter laws and more citations issued. It shocks me how in so many of these reports it reads, “no citations were issued”.
Be safe out there!

Hi, I was a bit shocked to see this on here as I am the one who was hit. Kinda brought it all back. I am doing ok. I always thought of myself as a pretty tough person, mentally and physically but this rocked me to my core!! I have not been back on a bike and don’t know if I ever will. I was an avid cyclist and triathlete and have lost that for now. I am a mom of two young children ( 3 and 7mnths) and they come before any hobby. I have been in rehab since the accident and still struggle with neck pain and migraine headaches. I am lucky though and I know it.
.
Unfortunately I am involved in a law suit because the person who hit me is some how fighting it??? The officer stated that CMPD does not cite if they did not witness the accident but he also stated that it was clear the driver was at fault and neglectful. I am grateful and so appreciative of all the support and well wishes I have received. If you ever see a female riding in a gigantic florescent orange bubble, that will be me
