Matt Parker, Get Well Soon
April 23, 2008. Cyclist Matt Parker was hit from behind by an unlicensed, uninsured 25 year old driver. The accident happened on the 8500 block of Old Concord Rd. Matt was taken to CMC University with non-life threatening injuries. According to Matt, himself:
“It was a clear, dry morning, approximately 7:30 am. I was riding a road bike with a Planet Bike Superflash tail light and my pants, jacket and backpack had reflective strips on them. I was going approximately 18-20 mph. The driver hit me directly on the back wheel and threw me from the bike about 15-20 feet into the grass. I landed on my back and broke 4 transverse processes in the lumbar area.”
The CMPD officer on the scene charged the driver with FAILURE TO REDUCE SPEED. This is a big deal. Normally, CMPD does not charge drivers involved in car-bike collisions with traffic violations unless they witness the accident. The driver was also charged with NO DRIVERS LICENSE/NO INSURANCE.
This section of Old Concord Rd. is popular with cyclists avoiding “The 29/49 Weave”.
I wish Matt a speedy and full recovery!
