The city put up new bike route signs. The routes don’t necessarily have bike lanes, but they imply a best route. As the ‘ 08 Bike Plan says, “Signed bike routes provide a logical and efficient network of facilities throughout the City to encourage bicycling as a viable mode of transportation.” The idea is that the signage can direct cyclists to the major points of the city. I rode both Bike 1 and Bike 3 on my commute today. Another 6 routes will be added sometime this year for a total of 40 signed route miles.

I saw the #1 route as I went up Colony yesterday. Don’t know if I turned before the route but I eventually lost the signs. Glad to see them up. That’s a great start. Other NC counties have a head start on us. Next step is to get an updated map.

Do you know where you get a map of where the Routes go?

At Mayor’s Ride this morning, KT said that a new map is being made for the signed bike routes. For now, the proposed routes are detailed in Figure 38 of the 2008 Bicycle Master Plan (Chapter 8).
